How to make friends
To make a new friend you need to
- make contact with them
- continue to communicate with them
- start to share more about yourself as time goes on
You can start friendships with all kinds of people:
- people you see often in many different places: at school, on sports teams, at club meetings, at lessons or at your favourite hangouts
- people you talk to on the phone (relatives, friends who have moved away)
- people you instant message, e-mail or write to
Wherever there are people around, you might find a new friend!
How to stay friends
Here’s what you need to do to keep a friend:
- Tell each other about your interests.
- Trust each other and be honest.
- Share your thoughts and feelings.
- Respect their opinions and beliefs.
- Relate to how they feel.
- Be sincere with each other.
- Accept them for who they are.
- Encourage and support each other.
- Commit to the friendship.
Remember, it’s our differences that make each of us unique.
Friendship is about exploring not only what we have in common, but also what makes us unique. As we build friendships we can learn from each other and appreciate the individual qualities that make each of us who we are.
