Prevention Myths

It's never too early to talk about tobacco. When you talk to your kids about not using tobacco, you can give them more than just good advice, you can give them a solid defense strategy to say "no." Remember that kids often seem to be defying authority when what they really want are tips they can use to help them resist peer pressure.

Myths parents tell themselves

I don't need to talk to my kids about smoking. They'll never smoke.

Up to about age 9, children generally have a strong moral view of the world and can sort things out easily according to what is 'good' and 'bad.' As they age, smoking can become a way to fit in and define themselves. They'll need your guidance to remain tobacco-free.

My kids won't listen to me.

Sometimes it's hard to believe, but kids eventually take on values and behaviours similar to their parents. By talking about what matters most to you and why - without heavy lectures - you can help your kids stay tobacco-free.

I smoke so my kids won't believe me.

Be honest about your addiction to tobacco and attempts to quit. A recent study showed that children of smoking parents who discourage their children from smoking are less likely to start.
